Sunday Is Mexican Independence Day: Three Places to Find Authentic Tacos in Broward

If your way of celebrating Mexican heritage is making your standard 2 a.m. Taco Bell visit, freeze and put down the Chalupa.

Clean Plate Charlie has got your covered on where you can celebrate Mexican Independence Day on Sunday, September 16, by visiting authentic Mexican restaurants in Broward. Andale!

El Guanaco Taqueria Y Antojitos

So guanaco means Salvadoran. But at El Guanaco in Oakland Park, they’re serving Mexican-style tacos. Voted “best taco” in New Times‘ 2010 accolades, the secret is in the kitchen, where cooks make the tortillas by hand. Wolf down a handful of tacos for less than $ 8.

Taqueria Dona Raquel
If you thought you learned all the Spanish you need to know in high school, put your skills to the test at Taqueria Dona Raquel in Pompano. How authentic is it? Let’s just say you’ll have a hard time ordering in English. With an extensive menu and breakfast, lunch, and dinner service, the restaurant is usually packed, but only by people who discovered the joint from someone else — the restaurant doesn’t Facebook, Tweet, or even have its own website. The only thing more legit would be if you are actually Mexican.

This is where you go if you plan on celebrating independence by creating your own carnitas concoction. Yes, you can buy tacos made to order here, but it’s also a tiny Mexican grocer where you can buy your tortillas and fixings and celebrate Mexican independence by creating your own dishes. There is a small meat counter and a bakery selling Mexican baked goods. Be sure to bring a Spanish speaker with you when you go, since it’s hard to get much accomplished in English. I speak from experience.
