Five South Florida Food-Related Events This Weekend: Copacabana Grand Opening Party and More

Ahhh, shoulder season. That slightly awkward, but not entirely unenjoyable, point in the year when the air is starting to feel less like the inside of someone’s mouth and the local dining scene is gearing up for an explosion in business.

This weekend, bid adieu to a summertime favorite and/or welcome to the neighborhood a new business opening in time to take advantage of an influx of displaced New Yorkers. After the jump, find five food and drink related activities taking place this weekend in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

1. The grand opening of Copacabana Supper Club
Will the product live up to the hype? Find out for yourself when this behemoth of a nightclub with a storied heritage kicks off its grand opening throughout the weekend. The marquee event is a special performance on Saturday night featuring salsa artist Jose Alberto “El Canario.” The party starts at 10 p.m. and continues into the wee hours of Sunday morning. Advance tickets are $ 20 and VIP tables are available. Call 954-767-0643. The Copacabana Supper Club is located in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

2. Food truck rally in support of United Way
If your love of a good food truck sandwich is matched only by your desire to help others in some small, but meaningful, way check out the United Way of Palm Beach County’s food truck rally/food drive on Saturday. A collection of seven trucks will gather from 4 to 8 p.m. at 2600 Quantum Boulevard in Boynton Beach. The suggested admission to the event is two non-perishable food items. (Hey! Some good can come of all those supplies you bought for hurricane Isaac.) Participating trucks include: Flour Power, Happy Samwhich, Mangia Mia, My Mad Scientists, Soup’d Up, and Veggie Love. It will also be the event debut for Friar Tuck’s, a food truck that was destroyed and then rebuilt in a matter of weeks. Read Friar Tuck’s Food Truck: Rebuilt Truck Debuts Today for the background on the small business.

3. Final Sushi & Stroll of the season
In a sign of summer drawing to a close, Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens is hosting its final Sushi & Stroll of the season from 5:30 to 8:30 tonight. The popular monthly event gives attendees an opportunity to view the grounds at a reduced price and sip on sake while slapping away mosquitos. (Seriously; consider wearing some bug spray to this thing.) Food is available for purchase at the Cornell Cafe and it’s all a very pleasant way to pass a sultry summer evening. The cost is $ 7 for adults and $ 5 for kids. The taiko drumming performances are an additional $ 2 and admission to those is on a first-come basis.

4. Riverwalk Mutts & Martinis
Love your dog? Love booze? This happy hour’s for you. The seventh Riverwalk Mutts & Martinis is from 5:30 to 8:30 tonight and admission means two complimentary cocktails, appetizers, music, and a silent auction. The dog-friendly party will be hosted at the Briny Riverfront Pub in Fort Lauderdale. Admission is $ 25 at the door.

5. The Food Network’s Aida Mollenkamp appearing in Palm Beach Gardens
Food Network devotees should circle Sunday on their calendar and head to the Williams-Sonoma at the Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens to hang with Aida Mollenkamp. The host of Food Network’s “Ask Aida” and the Cooking Channel’s “FoodCrafters” will be at the store from 1 to 2 p.m. for a cooking demo and book signing of her new tome, Aida Mollenkamp’s Keys to the Kitchen. She’ll only be signing books purchased at the Gardens’ Williams-Sonoma store, so you’ll need to bring a proof of purchase that you got the book there. Call 561-799-2425 to pre-order a copy.
