The debate about mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods, otherwise known as GMOs, is raging on. With California’s Proposition 37 — a bill that would require labeling of GMO foods — on the November ballot, many of these groups are stepping up their game in an attempt to add similar initiatives on state ballots across the country.

The nation-wide call-in day of action will attempt to engage community members by urging them to call district representatives requesting sponsorship of state mandatory labeling bills. Food & Water Watch will be present in cities throughout the country: Des Moine and Davenport, IA; Chicago and Peoria, IL; Tallahassee, Miami, West Palm Beach, Hollywood, FL.

The Hollywood event will take place in the center of Young Circle at 10am. The goal is to place 150 calls to local district state Senator Eleanor Sobel (D-FL). According to local Food & Water Watch representative Alyse Opatowski, “in just one month, more than 1,500 Floridians have signed on in support of labeling genetically engineered foods because of concerns that consuming them may have unknown long-term health impacts and pose significant threats to the environment.”

The event will include speakers, stacks of signed postcards from hundreds of supportive local community members, and a rally with individuals and children holding signs and wearing hazmat suits. Protestors will be urging passers-by to assist in placing calls to Senator Sobel. Dion Taylor from Rawone Foods, Jenna Tiedje, a concerned mother, and Trish Sheldon from GMO Free Florida will be speaking.
