Kings County Pizza â" North Miami Beach, Florida
Kings County Pizza wasnât some place I just discovered driving around town but thanks to the Chowfather. I had put it on my must try list over a year ago and there it laid dormant til Fatgirl Hedonist brought up Kings County Pizza a few months ago.
I was kinda overwhelmed as to what exactly I should order as the Pizza is the obvious choice but I remember CF mentioning the Baked Ziti. I figure I canât go wrong with some Garlic Knots and a slice of their Neapolitan Pizza to start with.
Those knots were just so perfect. I particularly liked the black pepper specks which added a little to the back-end of the bite. Iâm not a âcrustâ guy but if any pie could change my mind it would have to be this one. The bottom of the crust is covered in cornmeal which adds a really great dimension of texture and taste. No need for that horrendous garlic butter served with all the fast food pizza to dip your bread and/cornicione in. And that sweet sauceâ¦.this is real deal goodness.
I wasnât about to leave without trying one of their âHeroesâ or Subs as we Floridians call it. The whole âHeroesâ thing was kinda thrust upon when I met my friend Ed about 20 years ago. I was born in NYC but only lived there for a few years before my family decided to move down to South Florida. He had just moved here from Queens with all his New York lingo. Whenever we would order from the Pizza Joint nearest to my parentâs house (R.I.P. Frankâs Pizza on SW 8th Street and 81st) he would do the whole âHeroesâ thing. And when I visited NYC with him a year later I had the tables turned on me as it was the only way to order. I still ask for Subs but if Iâm in a New York state of mind, âHeroesâ it is.
I couldnât decided between the Meatball Parmesan Hero or Chicken Parmesan Hero. When you canât decide you do the only logical thing, you order both! They both have in common this crunchy great sub Hero bread, Mozzarella Cheese and their Homemade Sauce. The Meatball Hero has some nice sized, soft and flavorful Meatballs. It was good but not the best Iâve had. Now, the Chicken Parmesan Hero is up there with the best Iâve had. The breading on the Chicken was the tipping point. If you could choose only one, then the Chicken Parmesan is the one to go with.
Oh but my adventure is not over. I ended up taking an Old World Pie (the traditional Margherita, thin & crispy topped with fresh mozzarella, crushed tomato, basil & olive oil) home. I discovered that what I referred to as âreal dealâ earlier has now been upgraded to âthis is some serious shitâ. I hope to be back this weekend to try out the Salt & Pepper Wings as well as the Baked Ziti. And maybe a Slice or Hero or two.
Ed where you at?
