Sarussi Cafe & Subs in Westchester, Florida
If you live in Hialeah, Westchester, Kendall or West Miami then you probably already know about Sarussi Subs. You might have also seen Sarussi on the Man v. Food LIVE episode. If you donât well theyâre known for their giant 16 inch take on the Cuban Sandwich called the Sarussi Original (also available in 9 inch form). Their homemade bread is filled with Smoked Ham, Roasted Pork, Mozzarella Cheese, Pickles and a Secret Sauce.
The Sarussi Cafe & Subs is a new smaller concept than what you find at the other locations around town. It also features things like a Philly Cheese Steaks and Wraps. I decided to drop in for some breakfast and started with the go to Cuban breakfast item, a Cafe con Leche. Cafe con Leche for you of the Starbucks generation is a Latte made with some love. Here they serve the Cafecito (Expresso) on the side so you can make the Cafe con Leche to your liking. All youâve got to do after that is add sugar and youâre in heaven.

There are these little cylindrical wonders known as Croquetas, Iâm not sure if youâve ever heard me mention them before. The Croquetas from Sarussi are Top 5 worthy. The Ham Croquetas are excellent and the Chorizos were also pretty good.

The Pan con Tortilla (Omelette Sandwich) is served on their Homemade Bread. The Tortilla is made of Egg (duh), Ham, Mozzarella Cheese and came with a side of Fries. I wish they would have used a different type of cheese, it would have made a for a different sandwich experience.

Since it was nearing lunchtime I figured I would give the Sarussi Original a shot. No 16 inch sammy for me, a more humble 9 incher will have to do. The bread isnât as toasted as I remember it being on previous occasions but that Garlic Butter they glaze the top with is really a great move. The Cheese wasnât melted and the Ham and Pork were room temperature. I was hoping for a hot melty sub. The Sauce that everyone goes gaga over does not work its charms on me.

Sarussi Subs really is an experience only found in Miami. Theyâve been around for 40 years and have plenty of loyal sub devotees. On this day though, Croquetas won.
