El Tamarindo Pizza in Deerfield Beach: First Look
El Tamarindo owner Yecson Amaya didn’t want his new Deerfield Beach location to be like any other. Even his other restaurants bearing the same name. “We change it up with each location. In Fort Lauderdale, we have panini’s. In Hallandale, we have coal-fired pizza.”
So what makes the Deerfield Beach location stand out? It’s more Italian and Mexican than Amaya’s traditional Salvadoran fare at the other locations.
Amaya – along with his five brothers – opened the Fort Lauderdale El Tamarindo nine years ago. Before opening their own, the family worked at an Uncle’s Restaurant in Miami Beach. “They started a restaurant when they came to Florida from El Salvador, so we thought we would do the same thing.”
Instead of creating identical restaurants when each new location opened up, Amaya and his family opted to create little sisters instead – they’re related, but not identical. It makes them unique. The new location — The coal-fired chicken wings ($ 10) are cooked plain and served with grilled onions, but the homemade hot sauce gives the wings a great kick. It’s made fresh with mix of jalapenos with seeds, onions and carrots.Â
While the coal-fired oven stays at its Hallandale store, that shouldn’t deter you from the pizza. Traditional 16-inch pies start out at $ 15, but the specialty pizzas – like the El Tamarindo Pie, made with spinach, goat cheese, and sun-dried tomatoes – goes for $ 19.Â
Stay for the homemade flan with its custom caramel sauce or a even cannoli – both under $ 5.

Come Halloween night, does your neighborhood look like it was wiped out by the zombie apocalypse (and not in a good way)? Don’t go home empty handed this year! Here are the five best neighborhoods in Broward and Fort Lauderdale for trick-or-treating: Â
5. Pasadena Lakes (near Sheridan Street and University Drive in Pembroke Pines)Â
You won’t have to worry about standing on a dimly lit front porch while the person inside scrounges up what little candy is left, or doesn’t answer door at all. In Pasadena Lakes, everyone is well stocked and ready to go! When the sun goes down the neighborhood transforms into a spooky village, as almost every house is fully decked out for the occasion. The streets are loaded with little witches, aliens, and monsters (and their parents, of course!) which, somehow, makes everyone feel a little safer. Â
4. Victoria Park (Fort Lauderdale; Sunrise Boulevard and Federal Highway) The entire members of Victoria Park join together to make their neighborhood one of the best for trick-or-treaters as the streets are flooded with children every year. According to the forum on the Naples News some homeowners went through “1000 pieces of candy in 2.5 hours” in years past, and this year is no different. In fact, the people of Victoria Park are so enthusiastic about the holidays that they already seem to be planning their Christmas light displays. So while the homeowners are prepared with pounds of candy, and their houses are decorated to the nines, make sure you get there early because this gem of a neighborhood is no secret!
3. Driftwood Estates (Hollywood; Between Sheridan and Stirling – from 72nd to 64th Ave.)
Sandwiched between three schools, the sheer amount of kids that live in the neighborhood make it nearly impossible to ignore the gang of little gremlins beating down your door. This neighborhood is more about quantity rather than quality, though. Don’t expect full-size Snickers bars — just a million bite-sized ones. Isn’t the point to see who has the most candy at the end of the night? Besides, after you pick through your kids’ haul, you can just buy a whole bag of your favorites for half-off the next day.
2. Hollywood Lakes
On Halloween, kids are supposed to scare homeowners with their monster outfits, but at least one person in Hollywood Lakes is terrified of the rugrats just for being themselves. Â ”It’s a zoo. It’s a mess. There are so many kids around it’s almost scary,” says a resident of Harrison Street, who sees the intruders crowding the streets every year. “I’ve heard that they actually bus kids in from other neighborhoods,” he says. Whether that’s true or not, the friendly families here don’t seem to mind the influx — many houses are decorated to the max; these are the people who keep Party City and inflatable-pumpkin makers in business. Â Our interviewee, however? He’s locking the door, shutting off lights, and hiding.Â

Last year, a group of families teamed up and made the rounds. Hurricane Sandy Washed Fish and Crabs Into Local Restuarants
We’ve been lucky here in South Florida the last few hurricane seasons. For years after Andrew and then again after Wilma, we all took even the hint of an approaching storm with all due seriousness. But it’s been seven years since Wilma.
Sandy left mixed effects on Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Though we did not get the Frankenstorm that hit New York City, Â Sandy did not completely spare all of Florida. Some restaurants saw major flooding and missed out on business for a day or three. One oceanfront restaurant had fish and crabs washing up on the door. And at least one beachfront eatery got extra business, thanks to people eager to come look at the storm.Â
Here’s what we found when we checked in with a few local restaurants:Â
As the tide from the near-full moon rose and fell over the weekend, water gushed in and filled the parking lot at legendary Lake Worth beachfront diner John’s G’s before flowing out again. Nearby, the Ritz-Carlton also suffered some flooding that eroded the sand and damaged or swept away the landscaping. Down the street, a permanent lifeguard stand in Lantana was completely pulled away in a wave.Â
“It was crazy. I’ve never seen anything like that,” says John G’s co-owner, Wendy Yarbrough. “I thought a water main had broken, the water came in so fast.”Â
Yarbrough says the restaurant actually benefited from Sandy. Because the storm wasn’t that dangerous, curious people came in droves to the shoreline to see the weather and waves for themselves. So instead of being empty, John GÂ patrons had to wait for a table.
“We were so busy! People were wading through the water from the Ritz-Carlton. We don’t take reservations so we just lined them up and served them as fast as we could.”
Across the way at beachfront Dune Deck Cafe, the situation was a little more dire. The water wasn’t just in the parking lot. The ocean swelled up into the restaurant and brought the sea life with it.
“We cleaned up a lot of sand we had fish and crabs because the ocean came in,” says chef John Calomiris. “We cleaned up a lot of sand, and thank god we had no structural damage – the lifeguard stand disappeared.”
There was a great deal of beach erosion as well, but by midday Monday, Calomiris says that Dune Deck was full of curious regular looking to get out of the house, talk to their neighbors and see the damage for themselves.
There are even rumors that Manalapan resident Yanni might have lost part of his seawall. But, all in all, South Florida escaped fairly unscathed once again, and our snowbirds are probably more grateful than ever that they made their yearly migration.

The Best Beers For Halloween (and Where to Get Them in South Florida)
For a craft beer enthusiast, the most horrifying Halloween brew would be a watered-down, mass-produced, soulless barley pop. But one needn’t go the taste-free route in order to be festively freaky on Wednesday. The American microbrew and niche beer scene has enthusiastically risen to the occasion of creating celebratory and creative products that are perfect for popping open while watching a slasher movie or doling out candy to hordes of zombie teenagers infiltrating your neighborhood.
With plenty of help from local beer guru John Linn, of Brown Distributing, Clean Plate Charlie has put together a suggested menu of Halloween-appropriate beers, along with ideas on where to find the brews.

For a hyperlocal choice, Due South Brewing’s Isle of MaGourdo is a seasonal specialty ale available in limited quantities and for a limited time. The naturally-conditioned pumpkin ale is well-seasoned, but it doesn’t lay it on too thick. I tried a tasting of it recently at the Boynton Beach taproom and can attest that it is — as the bartender at Due South said — a pumpkin beer for people who aren’t really into (super sweet, overly spiced) pumpkin beers. At 5% ABV this is an easy-drinking beer and pairing suggestions include turkey and pumpkin pie. Head to the brewery to try a pint alone, or get one of the specialty mixes, which blend MaGourdo with Caramel Cream Ale or Roasted Cocoa Stout.
Linn also has some Halloween suggestions that are available in wider distribution. “Rogue Dead Guy Ale and Red Brick Laughing Skull are always two Halloween favorites; they will be on tap on Halloween at World of Beer Coconut Creek,” Linn said.
Other places where you can find Rogue Dead Guy include Royal Pig Pub & Kitchen (available on draft), American Social Bar & Restaurant, Parrot Lounge, Ye Olde Falcon Pub (available on draft, and Linn said “they’re sure to have a party” for Halloween), the Dubliner, and Brick Yard. Red Brick’s Laughing Skull is also available at Churchhill’s Pub in Miami and Respectable Streetin West Palm Beach.
For pumpkin beer lovers, Linn suggests hitting up World of Beer Coconut Creek where they’ll host a carving contest, plus “a seasonal-themed glass rimming ‘bar’ where you can get pumpkin beers rimmed with pumpkin pie spice/etc. for a small charity donation.” The party will rage from open to close and include a variety of seasonal beers, including Southern Tier Pumking, which Linn recommends.
To celebrate a little early, check out The Black Rose Irish Pub tonight in Boca Raton. The bar is hosting a pumpkin party from 8 to 10 p.m. with Shipyard Pumpkinhead and Smashed Pumpkin.
