Kids Eat Free on Halloween at Tijuana Flats

Like most fun things in life, once you have kids of your own the fun is no longer your own. This includes Halloween. Once upon a time, Halloween was about barely-there costumes, pumpkin beer, and crazy parties with smoke machines.

As a parent, it is now your responsibility to make a tour of the neighborhood, carry parts of your child’s costume as the night progresses, and inspect their candy for razor blades and poison.

After all that, you should probably treat yourself to a beer and a burrito and if you head over to Tijuana Flats for said B&B, you’ll get an extra treat.

Walk into any Tijuana Flats location with your costumed kids tonight, and they eat free.

“This is our third year offering the ‘kids in costume eat free’ special on Halloween,” says Tijuana Flats Director of Marketing & Public Relations, Ashley Montgomery. “Not only is it fun to see the kids, and adults alike, decked out in their Halloween costumes, but we’re also able to help parents make sure they’ve gotten their fill on fresh, tex-mex instead of candy.”

Be brave and trick or treat at the terrifying hot sauce bar. Treat yourself to a beer or glass of wine — Tijuana Flats is one of those special few counter-service places that serves alcohol. If you’re lucky, your precious little Spider Man will be passed out face down in his burrito bowl before you know it.

Happy Halloween to you.

There are Tijuana Flats locations in Hollywood, Deerfield Beach, Davie, Pompano Beach, North Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Coconut Creek, and

You Know What’s Really Good? The Chili Cheese Dog from Dog Eat Dog Food Truck

Look at this fella! I’m hungry all over again.

You know what’s really good? The Chili Cheese Dog from Dog Eat Dog Food Truck.

I was standing in line waiting to order from a Food Truck (no I won’t name them) on Monday at Arts Park where I had a clear view of Dog Eat Dog. As I inched up closer to place my order all I could think about was why wasn’t I eating the Chili Cheese Dog from Dog Eat Dog. It was too much for me to handle and much like a Zombie lusting Brains, I needed a D.E.D. fix.

The Dog is wrapped in Bacon and smothered in their homemade Chili and homemade Cheese Sauce. I chose to skip out on the Potato Sticks as I’m quite content with just these toppings. The Chili which had no beans (Yes!) had the right amount of beefiness and a touch of sweet. It could have probably only been better by adding a dash of Hot Sauce, not their fault but mine.

I ordered 2 and pretty much inhaled them. It was almost as if I never even had them. So I ordered a 3rd just so my wife could try it but she was too consumed with her Asquerosito Dog. Your next question must be, what is an Asquerosito Dog?

It’s a Venezuelan Street Food Style Hot Dog with Garlic Mayo, Pink Sauce, Ketchup, Mustard, Corn, Raw Onions, Potato Sticks and Parmesan Cheese. Another must try but it really is a bit of an acquired taste. In the meantime, take a good long look at the Chili Cheese Dog. It really is a thing of beauty.

“Bread of the Dead” and Other Foods to Enjoy on Dia de los Muertos FINAL

The world’s largest funeral party is soon upon us, with the celebration of Dia de los Muertos on November 1 and 2. And while the living might play dead for a day… they still have to eat, right?

Right. And the Mexican-born holiday has a crop of traditional fare to be munched upon in observance of the dead.

First, the cardinal rule is that observers consume the favorite foods of loved ones lost on Dia de los Muertos. So if your grandfather liked dry toast and gefilte fish… well, that sucks for you. But wait- there’s some good stuff too, like sugar skulls, pumpkin candy and most importantly, Dead Bread. Pan de muerto, or, “bread of the dead”, is one of the hallmarks of the celebration; the soft, sweet roll is widely baked during the weeks leading up to Dia de los Muertos.

Traditional folk often go so far as to bake the bread into human or bone-like shapes to represent those who have passed away. Now, before you judge: think about those poor chocolate Santas you mindlessly chuck in your mouth every year- they have feelings, too. Check out this particularly ill-faced character here, immortalized into a piece of sticky gooey yumminess:

So, you want your own Dead Bread for the holiday? Don’t fret: you don’t have to have it shipped all the way over from Mexico. We’ve shared an easy recipe with you here, drawn from the book Look What We’ve Brought You From Mexico:

Ingredients

 1/4 cup milk

1/4 cup (half a stick) margarine or butter, cut into 8 pieces

 1/4 cup sugar

 1/2 teaspoon salt

 1 package active dry yeast

 1/4 cup very warm water

 2 eggs

 3 cups all-purpose flour, unsifted

 1/2 teaspoon anise seed

 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

 2 teaspoons sugar

Instructions: Bring the milk to a boil and remove from heat. Stir in margarine or butter, 1/4 cup sugar and salt.

In large bowl, mix yeast with warm water until dissolved and let stand 5 minutes. Add the milk mixture.

Separate the yolk and white of one egg. Add the yolk to the yeast mixture, but save the white for later. Now add flour to the yeast and egg. Blend well until dough ball is formed.

Flour a pastry board or work surface very well and place the dough in center. Knead until smooth. Return to large bowl and cover with dish towel. Let rise in warm place for 90 minutes. Meanwhile, grease a baking sheet and preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Knead dough again on floured surface. Now divide the dough into fourths and set one fourth aside. Roll the remaining 3 pieces into “ropes.”

On greased baking sheet, pinch 3 rope ends together and braid. Finish by pinching ends together on opposite side. Divide the remaining dough in half and form 2 “bones.” Cross and lay them atop braided loaf.

Cover bread with dish towel and let rise for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, in a bowl, mix anise seed, cinnamon and 2 teaspoons sugar together. In another bowl, beat egg white lightly.

When 30 minutes are up, brush top of bread with egg white and sprinkle with sugar mixture, except on cross bones. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

Makes 8 to 10 servings.

Now that you’ve got your pan de muerto, you are well-equipped to observe the happiest funeral on earth. Fat Village Arts District in Downtown Fort Lauderdale is putting their own spin on the festivities with a massive party on November 2, so get your Dead Bread and get on down there.

It’s Halloween and if you don’t have a costume picked out yet you’re in trouble. You can either head out to the local party store and see if there are any pirate costumes left or we suppose you can always staple some old newspaper to yourself, not shower and go as some day-old fish (ewww).

If you’re looking for some inspiration, who better to turn to than Sandra Lee, that bat-shit crazy, semi-alcoholic Food Network hostess that shows us how to turn simple canned goods into something not worthy of a stray cat.

In this recent composite video, Sandra channels everyone from Liza to Barbra to Madonna — mostly with a cocktail in hand.

And you’ve got to get treats for the little ghosts and goblins that show up at your door. Auntie Sandy’s got some advice for you in that department, too. Get the little beggars some glow in the dark bugs. And make sure you’re dressed as mother earth when you greet the kids at the door. Good for a few laughs — and years of therapy for little Timmy.

El Tamarindo Pizza in Deerfield Beach: First Look

El Tamarindo owner Yecson Amaya didn’t want his new Deerfield Beach location to be like any other. Even his other restaurants bearing the same name.
“We change it up with each location. In Fort Lauderdale, we have panini’s. In Hallandale, we have coal-fired pizza.”

So what makes the Deerfield Beach location stand out? It’s more Italian and Mexican than Amaya’s traditional Salvadoran fare at the other locations.

Amaya – along with his five brothers – opened the Fort Lauderdale El Tamarindo nine years ago. Before opening their own, the family worked at an Uncle’s Restaurant in Miami Beach. “They started a restaurant when they came to Florida from El Salvador, so we thought we would do the same thing.”

Instead of creating identical restaurants when each new location opened up, Amaya and his family opted to create little sisters instead – they’re related, but not identical. It makes them unique. The new location — The coal-fired chicken wings ($ 10) are cooked plain and served with grilled onions, but the homemade hot sauce gives the wings a great kick. It’s made fresh with mix of jalapenos with seeds, onions and carrots.

While the coal-fired oven stays at its Hallandale store, that shouldn’t deter you from the pizza. Traditional 16-inch pies start out at $ 15, but the specialty pizzas – like the El Tamarindo Pie, made with spinach, goat cheese, and sun-dried tomatoes – goes for $ 19.

Stay for the homemade flan with its custom caramel sauce or a even cannoli – both under $ 5.

Five Best Neighborhoods for Trick-or-Treating in Broward and Fort Lauderdale

Halloween used to be about spending time perfecting your costume, carving pumpkins with your family, and…wait, who am I kidding? Halloween has always, and will always be all about the candy. Come Halloween night, does your neighborhood look like it was wiped out by the zombie apocalypse (and not in a good way)? Don’t go home empty handed this year! Here are the five best neighborhoods in Broward and Fort Lauderdale for trick-or-treating:

5. Pasadena Lakes (near Sheridan Street and University Drive in Pembroke Pines)

You won’t have to worry about standing on a dimly lit front porch while the person inside scrounges up what little candy is left, or doesn’t answer door at all. In Pasadena Lakes, everyone is well stocked and ready to go! When the sun goes down the neighborhood transforms into a spooky village, as almost every house is fully decked out for the occasion. The streets are loaded with little witches, aliens, and monsters (and their parents, of course!) which, somehow, makes everyone feel a little safer.

4. Victoria Park (Fort Lauderdale; Sunrise Boulevard and Federal Highway)
The entire members of Victoria Park join together to make their neighborhood one of the best for trick-or-treaters as the streets are flooded with children every year. According to the forum on the Naples News some homeowners went through “1000 pieces of candy in 2.5 hours” in years past, and this year is no different. In fact, the people of Victoria Park are so enthusiastic about the holidays that they already seem to be planning their Christmas light displays. So while the homeowners are prepared with pounds of candy, and their houses are decorated to the nines, make sure you get there early because this gem of a neighborhood is no secret!

3. Driftwood Estates (Hollywood; Between Sheridan and Stirling – from 72nd to 64th Ave.)

Sandwiched between three schools, the sheer amount of kids that live in the neighborhood make it nearly impossible to ignore the gang of little gremlins beating down your door. This neighborhood is more about quantity rather than quality, though. Don’t expect full-size Snickers bars — just a million bite-sized ones. Isn’t the point to see who has the most candy at the end of the night? Besides, after you pick through your kids’ haul, you can just buy a whole bag of your favorites for half-off the next day.

2. Hollywood Lakes

On Halloween, kids are supposed to scare homeowners with their monster outfits, but at least one person in Hollywood Lakes is terrified of the rugrats just for being themselves.  ”It’s a zoo. It’s a mess. There are so many kids around it’s almost scary,” says a resident of Harrison Street, who sees the intruders crowding the streets every year. “I’ve heard that they actually bus kids in from other neighborhoods,” he says. Whether that’s true or not, the friendly families here don’t seem to mind the influx — many houses are decorated to the max; these are the people who keep Party City and inflatable-pumpkin makers in business.  Our interviewee, however? He’s locking the door, shutting off lights, and hiding.

1. Harbor Beach (Fort Lauderdale; 17th Street near A1A)

Go east on the 17th Street Causeway and over the bridge, making a right just before you get to the Hess station. Don’t let the guard station scare you away; no one is ever inside and it’s just a deterrent to keep the riff-raff away. This neighborhood isn’t too full of kids; there are a lot of condos back here (like Point of the Americas) and just about every other million-dollar house is empty (Presumably, the owners are away at a fancy fundraiser or a better party on a yacht.)  But the neighborhood is mixed with doctors, lawyers, teachers, and judges, many of whom have little ones, so there are enough kids to make it eventful. Last year, a group of families teamed up and made the rounds. A dad pulled a wagon that carried the littlest kids, overflow candy, and… the best part: a makeshift bar — from which he gladly poured drinks and mixed cocktails for passing moms.

Hurricane Sandy Washed Fish and Crabs Into Local Restuarants

We’ve been lucky here in South Florida the last few hurricane seasons. For years after Andrew and then again after Wilma, we all took even the hint of an approaching storm with all due seriousness. But it’s been seven years since Wilma.

Sandy left mixed effects on Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Though we did not get the Frankenstorm that hit New York City,  Sandy did not completely spare all of Florida. Some restaurants saw major flooding and missed out on business for a day or three. One oceanfront restaurant had fish and crabs washing up on the door. And at least one beachfront eatery got extra business, thanks to people eager to come look at the storm.

Here’s what we found when we checked in with a few local restaurants:

As the tide from the near-full moon rose and fell over the weekend, water gushed in and filled the parking lot at legendary Lake Worth beachfront diner John’s G’s before flowing out again. Nearby, the Ritz-Carlton also suffered some flooding that eroded the sand and damaged or swept away the landscaping. Down the street, a permanent lifeguard stand in Lantana was completely pulled away in a wave.

“It was crazy. I’ve never seen anything like that,” says John G’s co-owner, Wendy Yarbrough. “I thought a water main had broken, the water came in so fast.”

Yarbrough says the restaurant actually benefited from Sandy. Because the storm wasn’t that dangerous, curious people came in droves to the shoreline to see the weather and waves for themselves. So instead of being empty, John G  patrons had to wait for a table.

“We were so busy! People were wading through the water from the Ritz-Carlton. We don’t take reservations so we just lined them up and served them as fast as we could.”

Across the way at beachfront Dune Deck Cafe, the situation was a little more dire. The water wasn’t just in the parking lot. The ocean swelled up into the restaurant and brought the sea life with it.

“We cleaned up a lot of sand we had fish and crabs because the ocean came in,” says chef John Calomiris. “We cleaned up a lot of sand, and thank god we had no structural damage – the lifeguard stand disappeared.”

There was a great deal of beach erosion as well, but by midday Monday, Calomiris says that Dune Deck was full of curious regular looking to get out of the house, talk to their neighbors and see the damage for themselves.

There are even rumors that Manalapan resident Yanni might have lost part of his seawall. But, all in all, South Florida escaped fairly unscathed once again, and our snowbirds are probably more grateful than ever that they made their yearly migration.

The Best Beers For Halloween (and Where to Get Them in South Florida)

For a craft beer enthusiast, the most horrifying Halloween brew would be a watered-down, mass-produced, soulless barley pop. But one needn’t go the taste-free route in order to be festively freaky on Wednesday. The American microbrew and niche beer scene has enthusiastically risen to the occasion of creating celebratory and creative products that are perfect for popping open while watching a slasher movie or doling out candy to hordes of zombie teenagers infiltrating your neighborhood.

With plenty of help from local beer guru John Linn, of Brown Distributing, Clean Plate Charlie has put together a suggested menu of Halloween-appropriate beers, along with ideas on where to find the brews.

For a hyperlocal choice, Due South Brewing’s Isle of MaGourdo is a seasonal specialty ale available in limited quantities and for a limited time. The naturally-conditioned pumpkin ale is well-seasoned, but it doesn’t lay it on too thick. I tried a tasting of it recently at the Boynton Beach taproom and can attest that it is — as the bartender at Due South said — a pumpkin beer for people who aren’t really into (super sweet, overly spiced) pumpkin beers. At 5% ABV this is an easy-drinking beer and pairing suggestions include turkey and pumpkin pie. Head to the brewery to try a pint alone, or get one of the specialty mixes, which blend MaGourdo with Caramel Cream Ale or Roasted Cocoa Stout.

Linn also has some Halloween suggestions that are available in wider distribution. “Rogue Dead Guy Ale and Red Brick Laughing Skull are always two Halloween favorites; they will be on tap on Halloween at World of Beer Coconut Creek,” Linn said.

Other places where you can find Rogue Dead Guy include Royal Pig Pub & Kitchen (available on draft), American Social Bar & Restaurant, Parrot Lounge, Ye Olde Falcon Pub (available on draft, and Linn said “they’re sure to have a party” for Halloween), the Dubliner, and Brick Yard. Red Brick’s Laughing Skull is also available at Churchhill’s Pub in Miami and Respectable Streetin West Palm Beach.

For pumpkin beer lovers, Linn suggests hitting up World of Beer Coconut Creek where they’ll host a carving contest, plus “a seasonal-themed glass rimming ‘bar’ where you can get pumpkin beers rimmed with pumpkin pie spice/etc. for a small charity donation.” The party will rage from open to close and include a variety of seasonal beers, including Southern Tier Pumking, which Linn recommends.

To celebrate a little early, check out The Black Rose Irish Pub tonight in Boca Raton. The bar is hosting a pumpkin party from 8 to 10 p.m. with Shipyard Pumpkinhead and Smashed Pumpkin.

One bonus beer suggestion from Linn: “Southern Tier Krampus is based after an evil Christmas spirit, but the demon on the label is equally suited for Halloween. It’s an imperial pilsner that you can find at a few places, namely

Cats as Food: Kitties in Costumes

Halloween is this week and while we’re sure we’ll see many dogs looking sheepish in their little devil ears and angel wings, we’ve thought of something even more humiliating…

A cat in a costume.

Read Also: Humiliate Your Dog for Halloween: Ten Terrible Food Costumes for Fido

See, while dogs will grin and bear being made into a laughing stock of the community in exchange for a rawhide treat and a scratch behind the ears, cats are way too independent and egotistical to allow humans a free pass at making a mockery of their precious whiskers.

Which is why it’s all the more fun to dress up a cat (just beware the scratching and biting that can ensue).

Don’t get us wrong…we love cats.

We just think that if we have to clean their littler box, the least we can do is laugh at them behind their backs.

“If that damn chihuahua next door so much as snickers at me…he’s ground chalupa meat.”
Fluffy never thought that those reincarnation stories could possibly be true. Until now.
“Wow! That’s some mighty strong catnip!”
“I never thought that Can I Haz Cheezburger cat was even remotely funny, by the way.”
“Ummm…look. Let’s make a deal here. You don’t light the stove and I won’t leave any more dead lizards on your pillow.”
“What the f**k are you looking at dachshund? At least I can take this stupid getup off at the end of the day.”

Calling all Jerks: Jamaican Jerk Festival is Back

Who doesn’t love a good jerk?  In case you haven’t caught on, we’re actually not talking about political candidates or even that uncle that shows up drunk at family gatherings. We’re talking the jerk that refers to spicy chicken, pork, and fish with roots in the Caribbean, especially Jamaica. Traditionally, jerk meats are cooked on pimento wood, using allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers.

The 11th annual Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival returns to Markham Park on Sunday, November 11th from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m., with dozens of vendors offering everything in the way of jerk — from chicken to lobster to ice cream.

In addition to lots of spicy things to eat, the festival has a kid’s area, interactive cooking demonstrations and, of course, the Jamaican Jerk cooking competition (we like to call it the great south Florida jerk-off).

Of course, music is also a large part of Jamaican culture, and the festival has a great roster of musicians from DJ’s to gospel acts to headliners Byron Lee’s Dragonaires.

Festival tickets are $ 20 in advance for adults and children 10 and up (kids under 10 are admitted free), $ 25 at the gate and can be purchased

Trick-or-Treaters Invade Rich Neighborhoods: Brilliant Kids or Appalling Trend?

For 364 days of the year, Harrison Street in Hollywood is almost eerily quiet, the lone trophy wife jogging down the Royal Palm-lined streets, the occasional Mercedes zooming toward the beach. But Halloween night, this street is crawling. With seven-year-olds.

Somehow, word got out: this is where the candy is.

In the olden days, kids went out trick-or-treating wherever the hell they lived. If you lived on a farm, you trekked over to your cousin’s house in the suburbs for the night. If you lived in a small town, you came up with two costumes, making the rounds in your first outfit and going back out later in your second. You were happy to get some butterscotch and a couple of chick tracts. (I’m lying; you weren’t happy. What kind of psycho terrifies children with these?)

Halloween improved vastly circa 1990 with the invention of snack-sized Nestle Crunch bars. Anthropologists say that sometime around 1994,

rumor spread among sugar addicts that the best place to score was rich neighborhoods. There were urban legends about people in McMansions giving out whole $ 100 Grand candy bars. Scientists have parsed the data and noted that there was indeed a correlation between giveaways of whole candy bar donations — the Super PACs of Halloween — and the rise of box stores like Costco and Sam’s Club where such things could be bought in bulk.

Soon, people were basically bussing themselves into neighborhoods where the chocolate flowed. While beneficial for the kids who loaded up, it was problematic for the families who bought too little candy for the influx of kids. In neighborhoods that had been abandoned by trick-or-treaters, sad grannies with no traffic sat home and wondering what to do with all those little boxes of raisins.

Nowadays, illegal trick-or-treaters invade rich neighborhoods in search of the best haul. With modern day technology, it’s almost like a little Mafia racket. They text — no, Tweet — “King Size Kit Kats @ 469 Hendricks Isle.”

Though the debate over rising tides of undocumented trick-or-treaters has not been sufficiently put to rest in scientific journals, it has caused a minor stir on the Internets.

Others say the meanies should chill the hell out — it’s just candy! One night a year! Share!

What says ye?

A. Trick-or-treating in rich neighborhoods is like a gateway drug. Next thing you know, these kids will be on welfare expecting handouts. Officers should be allowed to randomly stop kids and ask for ID to prove residency.

B. I support amnesty for trick-or-treaters. I hope those kids make out like bandits and that they are armed with a rotten egg and a roll of toilet paper for the stingy folks.

Tell us below.
